400,000 people have been evacuated in the DR Congo due to a possible volcanic eruption

The eruption of the Njiragongo volcano began last Saturday, claiming the lives of dozens of people, but on Sunday, the flow of damaged lava stopped before reaching Goma.

UN figures show that 32 people have been killed and at least 5,000 homeless since the volcanic eruption.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 24 people had been burned alive by lava.

Goma, with a population of 1.5 million, is located on the shores of Lake Kivu, about 12 kilometers from the volcano.

According to the preventive evacuation order, 80,000 households or about 400,000 people were evacuated.

Delivery of drinking water, food and other materials to people is organized.

Njiragongo, located in Virunga National Park north of Goma, is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa. In the eruption in 2002, about 250 people lost their lives and 120,000 sheltered.

Hundreds of post-shocks have been recorded by local volcanologists.
