4,000 luxury cars sank to the bottom of the ocean. One of the reasons – lithium ion batteries for electric cars ᐉ News from Fakti.bg – Auto

Two weeks ago, we announced that the Felicity Ace, a cargo ship containing nearly 4,000 Volkswagen Group vehicles, had caught fire in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Among the cars are Porsches, Bugatti and Lamborghini. Fortunately, the crew was rescued, but firefighters could not put out the fire, which was constantly burning from the lithium-ion batteries in the electric cars on board.

A tug tried to pull Felicity Ace back ashore, but that failed. The company that operates the ship issued a press release confirming that the ship had sunk about 220 nautical miles from the Azores in Portugal.

“MOL Shipmanagement Singapore, the managers of Felicity Ace, continue to make every effort to manage the damage and resolve the situation as a top priority,” the company said in a statement. “Additional information will be provided when it becomes available.”

Until more information emerges about the sinking, for now we can only assume that the losses are huge. It was confirmed that the ship was carrying nearly 4,000 vehicles, including 189 Bentleys, thousands of Porsches, Bugatti and more than a dozen Lamborghinis. Preliminary estimates reach $ 335 million.

Another interesting thing is that among the sunken cars is the Lamborghini Aventador, which ended its production with a V12 engine. Now, the Italian carmaker may have no choice but to restart the assembly line. Even when the fire raged on the ship, there was always some hope that some of the cars could be saved. After this last update, the chances are zero. No vehicle can be saved.

Rescue ships will remain around the area to monitor the situation. In addition to the huge financial losses and huge logistical complications of this event, the sinking of the ship will undoubtedly have a huge environmental impact with so many cars now sitting on the ocean floor. And mostly because of the aforementioned lithium ion batteries.
