40 years after the party was founded: Greens ponder new names – domestic politics

The official birthday cake, which the federal board of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen indulged on Monday, got by without a name – there was simply a large 40 on a green background and the yellow sunflower, the logo of the Greens.

Is that a hint at the end of the previous party name: Alliance 90 / The Greens? Is this name still up to date – or is it perhaps shorter?

For the 40th birthday, the Greens are considering renaming themselves. The plan: to at least partially delete the East German Alliance 90.

“It is part of our process that we are currently going through and that we will continue to discuss in the party,” said Green Party leader Annalena Baerbock on Monday – the 40th anniversary of the founding of the West German Greens as a federal party. They had merged with the East German “Bündnis 90” in 1993 – since then the official party name has consisted of both parts.

Like Birthler, she also experiences “that many young people with Alliance 90 cannot start something right away,” said Baerbock when asked. On the one hand, this opens up the possibility of talking about 1989 and the civil movement. At the same time, however, it was the claim of civil rights activists and today the Greens’ claim to be an alliance party, that could also be reflected in the name.
