40-year-old piece of Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding cake auctioned for 2,185 euros showbiz

The piece of cake measuring about 20 by 20 centimeters is decorated with a royal coat of arms in the colors red, blue and gold. It was presented to Moyra Smith, one of the Clarence House staff, around the wedding ceremony in 1981, and has been preserved in cling film and a cake tin all along.

Smith, who worked for the Queen Mother, put a label on it that read “handle with care” and signed it with the date July 27, 1981, two days before the official wedding date. Her family sold it to a collector in 2008, who has now put it up for sale again.

The English auction house Dominic Winter Auctioneers had expected a yield of around 500 pounds and was surprised by the high demand. “There were many bidders, especially from Britain, the United States and several countries in the Middle East,” said a spokesperson. According to him, the winning bid comes from an internet bidder from the Middle East.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married on July 29, 1981. Eleven years later, the couple separated. The divorce only became final in 1996.
