In 2022, authorities arrested a 40-year-old man suspected of trying to kidnap or kill Crown Princess Amalia. That writes the parole. According to the newspaper, it concerns 40-year-old Mohamad E., who was arrested in Amsterdam Southeast in November 2022. He is no longer a suspect in the case, but he is still detained in connection with suspicions of drug trafficking.

The newspaper writes that the investigative services linked E. to an account with a messaging service that could send encrypted messages, Sky ECC. This messaging service was regularly used by criminals to exchange messages. In 2021, messages would have been sent from the account related to the crown princess and three well-known crime journalists, including the murdered Peter R. de Vries. The messages attempted to obtain information about them.

According to Het Parool, the criminal investigation department suspected that the information about Amalia was obtained with the aim of committing “a serious violent crime”. Moreover, the detective would have suspected that E. was linked to Ridouan Taghi’s organization.

E. was eavesdropped and observed for a while because of the suspicions. In November of 2022, he was arrested. But in the first days after his arrest, the charges of kidnapping and murder were dropped, the newspaper reports. There would not be enough evidence that E. had such plans. However, suspicions remained against E. related to the trade in firearms, explosives and drugs. So he remained stuck.

Interrogations

In later interrogations, E. nevertheless continued to be questioned about the suspicions, writes Het Parool. His counsel, Yehudi Moszkowicz, is critical of the interrogations. He urges the Public Prosecution Service “to indicate whether there is more that substantiates the threat against the crown princess”, the newspaper writes. The link that the judiciary makes between E. and Taghi’s supposed organization also calls the lawyer “wanted”.

Amalia has been under heavy security since the autumn of 2022 following threats to the crown princess. The threats led, among other things, to the fact that the crown princess could not move into her Amsterdam student house. E. says to Het Parool that he finds it “very intense” that the crown princess is heavily protected.

The Government Information Service (RVD) does not respond to the NOS on the arrest and cannot say whether it will have consequences for Amalia’s security. In addition, the Public Prosecution Service says it cannot say whether the arrest was the reason for the heavy security of the crown princess.
