The study was conducted in the Italian town of Vo. In that place with 3200 inhabitants fell the first corona death of Italy at the end of February. The town then went into a lockdown, in which about 85 percent of the inhabitants were tested. Those tests showed that 2.3 percent of the population was infected at the start of the quarantine. At the end, 1.2 percent were still infected. Of the infected residents, 42.5 percent showed no symptoms.
Mass testing
The scientists say their research highlights the importance of mass testing and isolating infected individuals. According to the researchers, the infected inhabitants who showed no symptoms had the same amount of viruses in their body as the corona patients with symptoms.
“So even carriers of the virus that have no symptoms can contribute to the spread of the virus,” said study co-researcher Enrico Lavezzo of the University of Padua. “A symptomatic carrier is unaware of the infection and may meet many people, depending on his or her lifestyle and occupation,” said Lavezzo.
No children
Another finding of the Vo study is that none of the children under 10 years of age became infected, despite some of them living with infected adults. In a study published last week, it was stated that the chances of children dying from Covid-19 are very small.
