40 cases of severe infection from raw fish in Hong Kong – 2024-09-21 19:44:51

Authorities have recommended that workers at seafood stores, restaurants and the general public wear gloves when handling seafood.

Health authorities of Hong Kong reported a total of 40 patients diagnosed with a potentially fatal bacterial infection linked to the consumption of raw freshwater fish, warning that the number of infections could continue to rise.

He Health Protection Center (CHP) raised the alarm on September 13 after identifying 27 cases of invasive infections by group B streptococcus (EGB) in just six weeks and reported on Monday the detection of 13 additional cases of ST283 or serotype III sequence 283.

Two people with underlying diseases have died, according to the center, which says the recent rise in these infections is especially alarming because of the severity of the cases and the wide demographic spectrum affected, as individuals between the ages of 35 and 94 have fallen ill, with symptoms ranging from sepsis and joint abscesses to meningitis.

Group B streptococcus is a bacterium commonly found in the intestinal, urinary, and reproductive tracts. Although it is usually harmless and produces no symptoms, it can cause serious infections in the blood, bones, lungs, or membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control reported that its investigation into the latest outbreak revealed that 31 patients had been in contact with or handled raw freshwater fish before symptoms appeared, and five of them reported injuring their hands while doing so.

The agency also said that none of the patients were involved in fish sales or fish farming. The fish involved came from 23 markets in 11 districts, suggesting that the problem could affect wholesalers.

It is noteworthy that in October 2021, the former British colony recorded at least 80 cases of group B streptococcus infections, with two deaths among a subgroup of 32 patients.

According to the report Center for Disease ControlThe outbreak three years ago included more than 50 cases of ST283 associated with contact with raw freshwater fish or consumption of undercooked freshwater fish.

However, authorities have recommended that workers in seafood stores, restaurants and the general public wear gloves when handling seafood and avoid direct contact with raw fish or dirty water. EFE
