KOMPAS.com – Snoring while sleeping not only disturb the people around us.
On the other hand, snoring It can also be a sign of a health problem.
Snoring occurs when our upper tract is weak and limp. As a result, the airway becomes narrower.
This makes the path that air takes as it flows through the mouth and nose can be blocked.
Sleep medicine specialist Nancy Foldvary-Schaefer says that snoring is caused by the muscles supporting your upper airway becoming weak and limp at night.
“And snoring is the sound your airway makes when it’s unstable,” he says.

There are many things that can make a person snore, from sleeping positions to certain diseases. Here are various things that can trigger snoring:
1. Sleep apnea obstruktur
In many cases, snoring is one of the first signs of obstructive sleep apnea, a health condition in which breathing stops or is interrupted while you sleep.
Symptoms of sleep apnea include daytime sleepiness or fatigue, gasping or choking episodes at night, and a bed partner watching your breathing pause during sleep.
“Many people with sleep apnea don’t realize they stop breathing when they sleep,” says Dr. Foldvary-Schaefer.
2. The nasal airways are blocked
Blocked nasal passages can cause soft tissue problems, which can lead to snoring.
Injury to your nose, such as a deviated septum (the wall that separates one nostril from the other) or nasal polyps (inflammatory growths) can also cause the type of obstruction that causes snoring.
3. Sleeping position
Sleeping on your back can trigger snoring. Sleeping in this position can cause your tongue to relax toward the back of your throat, partially obstructing your airway.
A 2009 study of 2,077 sleep-disordered patients found that 54% of snoring was caused by sleeping position.

4. Effects of alcohol
Drinking too much alcohol before bed can cause relaxation of the muscles that keep the upper airway open, which can lead to snoring.
“Alcohol at night is a central nervous system depressant. That right can make your airway weaker,” he said.
When is snoring a problem?
Not all snoring is caused by health problems. However, loud and disturbing snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea.
“Most people who snore end up having symptoms of sleep apnea,” says Foldvary-Schaefer.
In addition to snoring, sleep apnea is also accompanied by the following symptoms:
Panting waking up at night
Still feeling tired when I wake up.
Stop breathing while sleeping.
If not treated immediately, sleep apnea can be a serious health problem.
Foldvary-Schaefer says sleep apnea increases the risk of metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes, as well as a higher risk for cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and even cognitive impairment.
Sleep apnea can also trigger serious heart conditions, including cardiac arrhythmias.
Other side effects include excessive daytime sleepiness and impaired concentration.
