INDONESIAN JOURNALIST – The life cycle of the house fly or also known as Domestic fly enter into suborder Cyclorrhapha. The characteristics of the house fly are gray and black, have large red eyes, a hairy body and a pair of wings, while the female fly is slightly larger than the male. This plural housefly species found throughout the world has 4 stages of development.
The house fly’s life cycle starts from the egg stage, larva (caterpillar), pupa (cocoon) and then goes to the final stage, namely the adult fly. Flies can come from anywhere where there is decaying organic matter e.g. manure, food scraps, general garbage, etc. Warm or humid weather accelerates the breeding of houseflies in temperatures between 17-32℃.
As is known, the life span of insects is relatively short. House flies usually live about 15-30 days. Although the life span is short, the reproductive ability of flies is very significant. The female fly can lay more than 900 eggs during her lifetime in numbers ranging from 75 to 150.
The mating process is initiated by the male fly and begins with a brief relationship. The female fly produces eggs, which are then fertilized by the male fly. The entire mating process can take from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The female then looks for a warm, moist place with sufficient food to implant the fertilized eggs. The following is an explanation of the 4 life cycles of house flies.

The first stage of the fly’s life cycle is the egg. After mating, female flies lay eggs and male flies fertilize them. Eggs look like tiny grains of white rice but can vary in shape and size. Flies lay their eggs in warm, moist places, usually on decaying organic matter such as food scraps, garbage, carrion, animal or human waste.
After entering around day 12, the female fly can lay more than 900 eggs in her lifetime, in numbers between 75 and 150.
Flies usually lay their eggs in moist, decaying organic matter, such as food debris, carrion, or feces. They are white and elongated, usually about 0.05 inches long. it takes between 8 to 20 hours for the eggs to hatch.

2. Larvae (Caterpillars)
The second stage of the fly’s life cycle is the larva, also known and referred to as the caterpillar. The fly larvae are worm-shaped and pale in color.
Hatch for three to five days. This stage focuses on storing energy by foraging in preparation for the next stage. The larva will shed its skin several times during this stage before finding a dark, damp place to pupate. When ready to pupate, the larvae will burrow into the source of the food they eat.
Larvae live close to their food sources such as animal carcasses, animal waste, and garbage. The molt period in flies occurs three times before the fly enters the next stage of its life cycle.

3. Pupae (Cocoons)
The third stage of the fly’s life cycle is the pupa or molting stage forming a shell and white larvae generally developing a darker outer shell. During this stage, between three and six days, the fly is usually inactive, does not move and does not eat. This is known as the process of developing a cocoon-like shell growing wings, antennae, and legs.
Since flies do not have horns or teeth to get out and break the cocoon shell, they make use of the fluid in the head. As soon as the house fly emerges from its shell, it grows and is now in its full form.
4. Adult Flies
When they become adults, they have a relatively short lifespan of 15 to 30 days. Female flies generally live longer, about 25-30 days, while males live about 15 days. In some cases, their lives can be extended by cooler climatic conditions.
The mating process is initiated by the male fly and begins with a brief relationship. The female fly produces eggs, which are then fertilized by the male fly. The entire mating process can take from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Although they are toothless insects with horns to attack humans, house flies can spread at least 100 different bacteria when they land on food.
House flies can also die from stress if they are in an enclosed space. They became confused and soon died while trying to get out. Because these insects are not adapted to live in air-conditioned spaces.

How to Cope with House Flies Easily
Although house flies are not classified as predators that can have a sting to injure humans, you must be aware of the indirect potential it has.
House flies can carry and spread a number of potentially deadly diseases including typhoid fever, salmonella, tuberculosis, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the pink eye), leprosy and cholera, as well as intestinal worms and bacteria that cause dysentery.
Because house flies live in dirty areas such as garbage, carrion, manure and rotting meat. Therefore they carry millions of microorganisms and then fly and land on food, body, and household items by leaving the germs there. Here’s an easy and inexpensive way to keep your home away from house flies.
1. Plants and Flowers
By planting plants and flowers around your house both inside and outside, these tips are effective in getting rid of flies from your home. Plants and flowers that can repel flies include:
Basil, marigolds, lavender, bay leaf, catnip.

2. Vinegar and dish soap
A mixture of vinegar and dish soap can help you trap flies. To use this method, mix about a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar salt and a few drops of dish soap in a glass. Cover the glass with plastic wrap.
Secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band and make a small hole in it. Flies will be attracted to the vinegar in the glass and will fly through the holes. However, dish soap causes flies to drown instead of landing in the vinegar.
3. Cayenne pepper and water
Cayenne pepper can help repel house flies. Mix it with water and spray it around the house to keep flies from getting in.
4.Plant Venus Flytrap
Venus flytrap is a carnivorous plant that eats insects. If you plant them outside, they will naturally eat flies.
When a fly enters a Venus plant trap, it closes around the fly. It then secretes digestive juices to dissolve the soft inside of the insect. It breaks down the insect for 5 to 12 days, then regurgitates the exoskeleton.
