4 reports of rare spinal cord inflammation after AstraZeneca

Side Effects Center Lareb has received four reports of a rare spinal cord infection after administering about two million shots with AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine in our country. According to the organization, the victims are three women and one man, between the ages of 32 and 66. The symptoms appeared within 6 to 20 days after the first vaccination.

The condition, called transverse myelitis, is inflammation of the nerves in the spinal cord. This results in complaints that are consistent with a spinal cord injury, such as acute weakness in the legs, sensory disturbances and disturbances of the bladder or intestines. It occurs in about 1 in 100,000 people per year. According to Lareb, it develops as a result of an autoimmune reaction and has been described in several conditions, including infections, including Covid-19 infections, and vaccinations.

“The fact that these reports are seen after vaccination does not mean that inflammation of the spinal cord is also a side effect of the vaccine,” Lareb emphasizes.

MEB notified

These are reports that arrived at Lareb since the start of vaccinations with AstraZeneca until June 15. The center has informed the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB) of the possible new side effect.

In a previous study with this vaccine, according to Lareb, inflammation of the spinal cord occurred in three people, one of which could possibly be related to the vaccine. The other two had other causes.
