4 pharmaceutical companies become suspects in acute kidney failure, including those under investigation by the BPOM

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The National Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) has revealed that a total of four companies have become suspects in the case of acute kidney failure that has killed hundreds of children in Indonesia.

The National Police have named two companies as suspects, namely PT Afi Farma and CV Chemical Samudera.

Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has named two other companies as suspects. They are PT Yarindo Farmatama and PT Universal Pharmaceutical Industries.

“Kidney failure while there are four companies, but later some will be subject to administration,” Director for Certain Crimes (Dirtipidter) Bareskrim Polri Brigadier General Pipit Rismanto said on Friday (11/18/2022) when contacted .

Pipit explained that his party had no objection that the BPOM also took part in the determination of suspects in this kidney failure case.

This is because BPOM has the authority to conduct investigations. In addition, the BPOM has public officials (PPNS) who can carry out investigations.

“BPOM has the authority to enforce the law, investigate, the PPNS is connected to the manufacturers. Because it is their job to do the oversight,” he said.

Even so, Pipit stressed that the BPOM’s determination of the suspects had gone through the coordination of the National Police.

He said the police and the BPOM both have law enforcement authority.

“The difference is that we, the police, first determine who is responsible for the patient. There are patients who die, the patient’s family dies, we will investigate first,” Pipit added.

Earlier, Bareskrim Polri named two companies as suspects in the case of acute kidney failure that killed hundreds of children.

The two companies are PT Afi Farma Pharmaceutical Industry and CV Chemical Samudera (CS).

“These two companies are suspected of committing the crime of manufacturing medicines or distributing pharmaceutical preparations that do not meet the standards and/or requirements of safety, efficacy/benefits and quality,” wrote the head of the public relations division of the national police , Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo in a written statement, Thursday (17/11/2022).

Dedi said the determination of suspects for the two companies came after detectives conducted inquiries and screened 41 people.
