Queensland, Australia –
A bird crocodile A nearly 4 meter long bird that has been terrorizing both humans and animals in Queensland for almost a month has been captured by wildlife officers. The crocodile, nicknamed Herbie by some residents, roams around the Herbert River stalking pets and livestock, making it a dangerous animal.
Quoted detikINET from the Guardian, the reptile was caught in a trap on the edge of private property on the Herbert River in Cordelia. At the same time, another 3 meter long crocodile was also caught in the Ross River.
Lawrence Perticato, who reported the crocodile to authorities, said the crocodile started coming at them. “I’ve lived on the river all my life and am used to crocodiles, and I know when a crocodile is dangerous,” he said.
The crocodile had eaten three of his neighbor’s chickens and the people there were scared. However, the manager of the Australian Reptile Park, Billy Collett, said that was the nature of crocodiles.
“He just did what he was supposed to do. He saw the potential to kill, there was prey, and did what he usually did. Yes, they are dangerous and can be aggressive, but that is normal behavior,” he explained.
Collett advises against keeping animals such as chickens near the water’s edge in these areas. The two reptiles were moved to a crocodile farm or zoo. But it warned that even though the crocodile had been removed, the Herbert and Ross Rivers would not necessarily be safer.
“The Townsville area is a crocodile area, and people need to be ‘wise’, making sensible choices around waterways,” said Tony Frisby, a wildlife expert.
After being hunted almost to extinction in the 1970s, crocodile numbers in Queensland have soared to between 20,000 and 30,000. The population is expected to continue growing at 2.2% annually, according to the state’s environmental department.
