Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia —
crown prince Saudi Arabian, Mohammed bin Salman (MbS), once again drawing criticism after the story of the fight for the throne of the royal heir between him and his cousin Prince Mohammed bin Nayef was once again highlighted in the media in 2017.
King Salman removed his grandson Prince bin Nayef as Saudi crown prince in June 2017 and appointed his son MbS to the second most powerful position in the kingdom.
In reports from several royal sources and text messages from Prince Mohammed bin Nayef obtained by journalists The Guardian Anuj Cophra in his in-depth report titled “The Godfather, Saudi Style: Inside the Coup That Brought MBS to Power” On Tuesday (29/11), Prince bin Nayef abdicated in a mafia coup staged by MbS.
Here are four of MbS’s cunning and brutal tactics to take the throne and become crown prince.
1. Threatening to rape the former Crown Prince’s family
MBS, through one of his trusted men, is said to have threatened Prince Mohammed bin Nayef with raping his entire female family unless he renounced the title of crown prince and handed it over.
This was revealed by one of the sources close to bin Nayef, on the basis of an exclusive report The Guardian.
According to the source, the threat started when the government called bin Nayef to attend a meeting at King Salman’s palace in Mecca on June 20, 2017.
At that time, bin Nayef was herded into a room and locked up for hours. He was invited to sign a letter of resignation and swear allegiance to MbS.
But bin Nayef refused. This refusal was followed by threats that his family would be raped if he did not immediately relinquish the title of crown prince.
2. Point the gun like a mafia
MbS’s efforts to seize the throne of the future king’s successor did not stop there. An MbS bodyguard is also said to have pulled a gun on bin Nayef when the prince was asked to swear allegiance to MbS.
The incident occurred after bin Nayef finally signed a letter of resignation as crown prince.
Also from the same source, bin Nayef was allegedly asked to enter the next room, where MbS was waiting with cameras and a gun-toting bodyguard, after he had been locked up for hours.
Footage released by the Saudi broadcaster shows MbS approaching his cousin and dramatically leaning down to kiss bin Nayef’s hands and knees. In a series of photos circulating in the media, MBS and Prince Mohammed bin Nayef appear intimate.
However, through testimony from several sources and text messages from Prince Mohammed bin Nayef to his advisers, the prince admitted he was held at gunpoint when forced to recite an oath of allegiance to MbS upon handing over the throne of crown prince.
“When I swore allegiance, I had a gun on my back,” Nayef wrote in a message to his adviser.
