Jakarta –
The first case of monkeypox-related death outside of Africa was reported in Brazil. Not long ago, Spain also reported a case of death which was also related to monkeypox.
Monkeypox or monkeypox is a rare zoonotic disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. This disease has been widely discussed since the WHO received reports of cases of monkeypox from non-endemic countries.
Initially, monkeypox was first discovered in a monkey colony in Denmark which was kept for research. The first case of monkeypox to attack humans was in 1970 in the Congo. Since then, monkeypox has become an endemic disease in several parts of Africa.

Although it has not been detected in Indonesia, the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) has asked all doctors to be aware of the symptoms of monkeypox in patients. This is because there have been confirmed cases of monkeypox in a neighboring country, namely Singapore, with 9 confirmed cases and 1 confirmed case in Thailand.
Previously, deaths related to monkeypox only occurred in endemic countries in Africa. The reported death in Brazil is the first outside Africa, and Spain is the first in Europe.
Here are 4 facts about the first deaths related to monkeypox outside Africa.
1. Experienced by Brazilian men
Brazil became the first non-endemic country affected by monkeypox. This condition is experienced by a 41-year-old man. According to a report from Brazil’s Ministry of Health, the man had lymphoma, a weakened immune system, and a comorbid disease that worsened his condition.
So far, 1,066 confirmed cases and 513 suspected cases have been reported. According to data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health, more than 98 percent of confirmed cases are transmitted from same-sex sex, i.e., men with men.
2. Have comorbidities
A monkeypox patient who died in Brazil was reported to have had lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. He also has a weakened immune system.
“The co-morbidities he experienced worsened his condition,” said the local health ministry, quoted by Reuters on Saturday (30/7/2022).
Monkeypox or monkeypox can occur in someone who has a comorbid disease. This condition is evidenced by the first case found in Brazil, the first man confirmed to have monkeypox aggravated by a comorbid disease.
Mohammad Syahril, a spokesman for the Indonesian Ministry of Health, said the same thing in a virtual press conference related to “Updates for Handling COVID-19, Acute Hepatitis and Monkeypox in Indonesia”, according to him, this virus can attack someone who has comorbidities.
“What needs to be considered if there is a complication of secondary infection or bronchopneumonia, or sepsis. Because this is a complication of monkeypox that can occur, especially for people who are immunocompromised or comorbid,” he said, Friday (6/24/2022).
