French products are still sold in Indonesian minimarkets. Although, exclamation boycott of French products getting louder. Here are the facts:
1. MUI Request a Boycott
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) called for a boycott of French products. This followed French President Emmanuel Macron’s stance on his defense of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.
“Boycotting all products originating from the French state and urging the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to exert strong pressure and warning to the French Government and take a policy to temporarily withdraw the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia in Paris until President Emmanuel Macron retracted his words and apologized to the Muslim Ummah. -The world, “wrote MUI in an appeal letter signed by Secretary General Anwar Abbas and Deputy General Chairman Muhyiddin Junaidi (30/10/2020).
From monitoring detikcom, Monday (2/11/2020), the minimarket that sells French product one of them is Alfamart in the Rawa Belong area, West Jakarta. In this mini market you can still see French products on display.
This shop does not appear to be boycotting French products as the shops that did boycott and go viral. The arrangement of items on display as usual. French products appear on the shelves, such as Aqua drinking water, SGM milk, and Garnier.
Not far from the minimarket is Alfamidi. Likewise, the products sold are not much different from the previous Alfamart.
3. 212 Mart Still Selling French Products
French products are also still being sold at 212 Mart, Rawa Belong, West Jakarta. From detikcom’s monitoring, there are still products touted as French products, such as Aqua and SGM milk.
The shopkeeper admitted that there was no direction from the owner not to sell these products. “Haven’t said anything yet. There aren’t many here, only Aqua and SGM milk,” he said.
When asked about the urge to boycott French products, he did not mind. According to him, it depends on the shop owner.
“It’s fine for me. I only work here according to his mother,” he added.
4. Aqua profile
This company was first founded in 1973 by Tirto Utomo under the name PT Golden Mississippi. Its first factory is in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi, West Java. Then, in 1974, the company released its first product in a 950 ml glass bottle. The company continued to grow until it established its second factory in Pandaan, East Java in 1984.
In 1998, PT Tirta Investama and Danone through Danone Asia Holding Pte Ltd signed an agreement to collaborate to form the Aqua group. In 2000 Aqua also began to include ‘Danone’ on all of its products.
Danone began buying many shares belonging to PT Tirta Investama (previously listed as PT Aqua Golden Mississippi) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Currently, Danone is also the majority shareholder of the Aqua group. Since then, Aqua has continued to develop its business. Meanwhile, the Danone Aqua products issued are in the form of Aqua glasses, Aqua bottles, Aqua gallons, to Aqua Kids.
Meanwhile, Danone itself is a food and beverage producer headquartered in French.
