A study of 2,000 people living in Pakistan, published in the Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences, indicated that elevating the head and chest during sleep helped relieve reflux.
American Dr. Christopher Marshall, head of the Department of Gastroenterology at the University of Massachusetts, advised avoiding fatty foods, as they are one of the most effective things to prevent heartburn.
He continued: “This includes traditional foods such as fried foods, and also fatty meats, because fat causes the sphincter to relax and allow acid to pass through.”
He added: “Spicy foods are a known cause of heartburn.”
He continued: “In a survey that included 100 patients with esophageal acid reflux, the cause of heartburn in 62% of them was eating spices.”
