A 4.0 magnitude quake struck at 4:44 a.m. Monday in Inglewood, near Los Angeles, producing shaking that was felt slightly and briefly in parts of San Diego County, according to the United States Geological Survey.
Scientists said the quake started about 12 miles deep, on an unidentified fault. This is slightly deeper than most Southern California earthquakes and minimized the amount of shaking felt on the surface. Tremors were recorded in Oceanside, San Diego, La Mesa, and Spring Valley.
The main shake was preceded by a 3.3-degree tremor at 4:15 a.m., the USGS said.
These types of tremors are not unusual in Southern California and do not normally lead to a significantly larger event.
