CF Montreal lost their fifth game in six games in all competitions, losing 4-1 to NYCFC at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
To start this match, Wilfried Nancy had made some changes to his starting lineup. Rida Zouhir and Gabriele Corbo were established, Kei Kamara and Romell Quioto were there too. These four players were not in the starting 11 last Wednesday in Mexico.
A bit like Wednesday’s game, CF Montreal was completely dominated at the start of the game. NYCFC needed just seven minutes to find the back of the net.
Bottled up in his area, Kamal Miller cleared the ball badly, which led to a superb piece of play from the locals.
Keaton Parks intercepted the clearance, he handed it to Talles Magno at the penalty spot, who cushioned the ball for Alexander Callens who fired a pellet just below the horizontal bar. It was 1-0 NYCFC.
In the 14th minute of the game, Montreal got a first golden chance when Joël Waterman was forgotten at the far post on a superb cross, but the tall Canadian flew into the air on what seemed a certain goal.
In the 20th minute, the CFM conceded another goal on an error caused by the short game, which Nancy wants to impose. Sebastian Breza looked for a short central pass in front of his box for Victor Wanyama, but the latter fumbled and gave the ball back to the opponent.
Another turnover in the hotspot led to a goal, this time by Santiago Rodriguez. It was 2-0 NYCFC then. This is the third gift of its kind offered by the CFM this season to its opponents in three MLS games.
At halftime, it was 2-0 New York, with the shots at 10-4 also to the advantage of New Yorkers.
Triple substitution at half-time
Upon returning to play, Nancy replaced three players. Zouhir, Alistair Johnston and Lassi Lappalainen left, replaced by Djordje Mihailovic, Robert Thorkelsson and Zachary Brault-Guillard.
As soon as he comes into play, the young Quebec defender sees a ball hit the post and arrive directly at his feet, but his shot misses the target, in the side netting on the right.
In the 52nd, Brault-Guillard did not miss his chance, he scored his first of the season, completing a cross from Mihailovic. Djordje made an extraordinary run towards the surface, when he was severely hampered by an opponent. It was 2-1 New York.
But in the 63rd minute, on his first shot of the second half, the NYCFC regained the 2-goal lead, as Magno jumped and redirected a cross with his head into the net, he who had two Montreal players on his back.
In the 83rd minute of play, Waterman serves a weak pass to Miller in front of the Montreal surface. Thiago Andrade grabs the ball, rushes to the surface, shoots and scores. It was the second goal in as many shots for NYCFC in the second half. It brought the score to 4-1, which also turned out to be the final mark.
CF Montreal therefore begins the MLS season with three consecutive losses.
The next game is Wednesday night at the Olympic Stadium for the second meeting of the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League, against Cruz Azul.
