3M Chemical Company Layoffs and PFAS Production Stoppage Update: Zwijndrecht Dismissals and Remediation Promises

A year ago, the American chemical company announced that it would lay off around 2,500 people worldwide, including possibly up to 200 in Zwijndrecht (as part of stopping PFAS production). That figure was later adjusted to 98.

The dismissals in Zwijndrecht are happening in ‘waves’ and are fixed in a planning with the unions. “About 10 people have already been fired from those 98,” said the Christian trade union ACV. “But the demolition and emptying of the installations still have to be done, of course. A new wave will follow next month and another five people will leave.”

Finally, 3M promises in the letter to fulfill all obligations in accordance with the various remediation obligations. Last year, the Provincial Executive of the Province of Antwerp refused an application from 3M to adjust the discharge standards for various types of (ultra) short-chain PFAS.

The letter does not specify why 3M is bringing forward the end of production.
