Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia have found a way to use 3D printers to create a ‘polypill’. A polypill like this could combine several medications and thus reduce the ‘tablet burden’ of patients.

The compound pill would reduce the risk of overdose or overdose, said Dr. Amirali Popat, an associate professor at the University of Queensland, was against it ABC News. “You can put different medicines in one tablet. So you only have to take one pill a day.”

More and more medicine

It is mostly older people who take ten or more medicines a day. As populations around the world age, polypharmacy, among other things, is becoming a bigger problem, says Liam Krueger, a PhD student at the University of Queensland. Polypharmacy is the continuous use of five or more medications together.

To make the drug, the same 3D printing technology is used to make toys, tooth molds or car parts. According to Krueger, the technology has been developed so far that the polypill can be completely tailored to your wishes.

“We can change the color of the tablet, add symbols like the sun and the moon for morning and evening doses, or print braille directly on the tablets for easier reading,” said Krueger.

Clinical trials

In France, a 3D printer is already being used in a hospital cancer clinic. They do clinical trials with medicine. In Australia it will take some time before the polypill is released.
