Looking Glass Factory wants to Delivery of his 8K monitor kick off. However, the 32-inch display will initially only be sold on request. The panel was already presented at CES 2020 earlier this year. It can create a 3D effect using light field technology, so that a displayed object changes its perspective at least partially depending on the viewing angle. The focus due to the distance to the display also plays a role.
Job market
The 8K panel is 32 inches in size and can be connected to conventional computers. However, programs must be adapted with a specially developed software development kit – the Holoplay Core SDK – so that they can be displayed with a three-dimensional effect. Since the display should be suitable for displaying 3D models, at least a dedicated high-performance graphics card is also useful. At CES 2020, the company connected it to an Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Ti, which is considered a high-end model.
Monitor for a niche
The Looking Glass 8K has a viewing angle of around 50 degrees. After that, the picture is no longer displayed correctly, as well Golem.de found when trying. The panel is connected to a computer via the display port, but also requires a USB cable. Images can update at a maximum of 60 frames per second. The light field effect is to be created from 45 elements.
On many demonstrations, the development team shows the monitor in connection with various medical and scientific applications, for example to display dentures or molecular structures. The 8K screen is not designed for the consumer market. This is also confirmed by the ordering process of the Looking Glass 8K: interested parties can register for the order using the form. Neither a price nor exact availability are given there. The screens are likely to be produced on request and shipped to customers immediately after completion and calibration.
