The number of victims in the Gaza Strip by the military offensive of Israel The death toll has reached 39,480 and 91,128 wounded in 300 days of war, while the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen in the devastated Palestinian enclave and hopes for a ceasefire fade.
“In the last 24 hours, the Israeli occupation committed two massacres against families in the Gaza Strip, leaving 35 dead and 55 wounded.”the Gaza Health Ministry, controlled by the Islamist group Hamas, reported on Thursday.
The total number of dead and wounded is compounded by some 10,000 missing under the rubble and 1.9 million displaced people – almost the entire population of Gaza – who are surviving amid widespread destruction, collapsed hospitals, the latent threat of famine, and shortages of drinking water, medicine and electricity.
The war, which has lasted almost 10 months, broke out on October 7 last year after a Hamas attack on Israel that left some 1,200 dead and more than 250 kidnapped.
Since then, Israel has been leading a tough offensive by air, land and sea across the entire length of the devastated enclave.
Israeli offensive
On Wednesday, the Israeli army reported that in the last few hours it had attacked some “35 terrorist targets, including armed cells and military structures.”
In Khan Yunis, a major region in the southern Gaza Strip from which ground troops withdrew on Tuesday, Israel attacked “launchers loaded with projectiles aimed at Israeli territory,” a military statement said.
In addition, Israeli forces continue to carry out “precise and intelligence-based operational activities” in the area of Rafah, a city in the far south bordering Egypt where ground troops are deployed.
In the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood, soldiers dismantled a Hamas explosives-laden structure.
Meanwhile, Israel has carried out attacks in central and northern Gaza in recent hours.
“Eight civilians were killed and others wounded after Israeli occupation fighter jets attacked a civilian vehicle near the entrance to the al-Maghazi refugee camp” in the centre of the Gaza Strip, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.
In nearby Nuseirat camp, one civilian was killed and others wounded in three airstrikes, he added.
New evacuations
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), some 200,000 people were evacuated from Khan Younis between 22 and 27 July, during the army’s latest ground incursion.
For its part, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) claims that only 14% of the Gaza Strip is not under “evacuation orders”, which has caused huge overcrowding in areas considered “safe” and has facilitated the outbreak of epidemics.
In addition, “almost all” families are forced to skip meals or reduce their own food intake, while more than 500,000 children under five years of age, as well as pregnant and lactating women, urgently need vital nutritional support throughout the Gaza Strip, UNRWA stressed.
Meanwhile, ceasefire negotiations have cooled amid rising tensions in the Middle East, especially following the recent killings of Hamas’ military leader in Gaza, Mohamed Deifand the military chief of the Shiite group Hezbollah in Lebanon, Fuad Shukrin separate Israeli attacks.
Besides, Ismail HaniyehHamas political leader, was killed on Wednesday in an attack in Tehran, which Iran attributes to Israeli forces. EFE (I)
