At a nickel mine in eastern Canada, 39 workers are trapped underground following an accident that damaged the transportation system, cutting access to the main exit, Brazil’s mining company Vale said on Monday.
The crash happened on a Sunday afternoon. None of the miners were injured and have access to food and water, Vale said, hoping to release his workers by Monday evening local time.
The company said the accident occurred when an excavator bucket detached from the transport system collided with it, rendering the system unusable.
“The rescue unit has reached the miners and is starting to lift them above ground using a secondary exit staircase,” Vale reported.
“We understand that this rescue will take some time, and we are very relieved to hear that the miners have not been injured,” Ontario Provincial Prime Minister Dag Ford said on Twitter.
All operations at the Totena mine in Sadbury, Ontario, have been suspended since Sunday. Vale said it would conduct an assessment before resuming work.
The mine was closed in 1972, but Vale reopened it in 2014. In the first six months of 2021, about 3,600 tons of nickel were mined there.
