Jakarta –
Victims died as a result of the earthquake that rocked Turki and Syria continues to grow. Now recorded more than 3,800 people died in this incident.
At least 1,444 people died on Monday (6/2) across Syria, the government and local rescue authorities said. Meanwhile in Turkey, the death toll has increased to 2,379.
The new victims bring the total deaths in the two countries to at least 3,823. Nearly 14,500 people were injured and 4,900 buildings flattened by the earthquake.
Turkey itself announced a seven-day mourning period to honor the victims who died. Rescue efforts were hampered by a winter blizzard that covered major roads with ice and snow. Local officials said the quake grounded three main airports in the area, making it difficult to deliver vital aid.
More than 12,000 people were injured in Turkisaid the disaster management agency, while Syria said at least 3,411 people were injured.
Dozens of countries are known to have promised aid after the M 7.8 earthquake struck. This earthquake occurred while people were still sleeping and in the midst of freezing weather which hampered emergency efforts.
Monday’s first quake occurred at 0417 (01 17 GMT) at a depth of about 18 kilometers (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, the US Geological Survey said. The Danish geological institute said the tremors reached Greenland’s east coast about eight minutes after the main quake hit Turkey.
