In the 29th week of pregnancy, Mrs. Iza was taken to a hospital in Ruda Śląska with a high temperature, coughing and breathlessness. There, on March 10, it was decided on an immediate emperor. Lenka was born premature with only 1,300 grams.
– The woman was put into a pharmacological coma, and then a respirator was breathing for her. – Unfortunately, it was also not enough, it was necessary to reach for ECMO – says prof. Marian Zembala from the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze, to which Ms Iza was transported.
ECMO is a mechanical device designed to oxygenate the blood. Such therapy is very rarely used in pregnant or puerperal women.
– We fought a few weeks for her condition on this ECMO to improve. Unfortunately, the patient’s lungs were irreversibly damaged – adds Ewa Trejnowska, an anesthesiologist from the clinical department of cardioanesthesia and intensive care at the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze. – ECMO did not heal, but gave hope that a donor would be found. After 5 weeks, both lungs were transplanted. Without it, she would not have survived – she adds.
– This transplant might not have happened. I sent doctors videos, family photos, so that they would give my wife more time, they waited. And the lungs were found for her – says the happy husband, Jacek Prohas (39) with tears in his eyes.
Lung transplant during COVID-19
The transplant at Mrs. Iza was performed on April 9 this year. – The lungs were irreversibly damaged, the condition worsened, ECMO could not cope for a long time. Lungs were needed for the patient to survive, but the waiting period was extended. On April 4, the first donor appeared, but after research it turned out that the risk of rejection was high. We did not perform the operation until April 9, ‘says the transplant surgeon, Maciej Urlik.
– I am happy that I got a second chance at life. Since March 10, when I had a cesarean, I have a void. I was in a pharmacological coma and woke up a month later with new lungs. I was slowly realizing what I had been through during this time. Today, thank you all – says 38-year-old Iza Prohas, still gasping for breath.
– Yes, it is resurrection for me, I am the only case in Europe who defeated COVID-19 during pregnancy, was hooked to ECMO and got a new life. I recovered so quickly, I don’t know where I had so much strength from. I want to see my children and hug them, tell me how much I love them – adds Iza, who finally returns home.
Little daughter Lena is doing very well, today she weighs 4 kg. – Until now, her sister-in-law took care of her, now we will be the whole family again – adds Jacek, happy dad.
