In India, 38 men have been sentenced to death for bomb attacks in the city of Ahmedabad in 2008. Eleven others received life sentences. They have been found guilty of committing a terrorist attack.
It is the first time that so many people have been given the death penalty for one case in India, writes news agency AP.
On July 26, 2008, nineteen bombs went off at various locations in Ahmedabad in just over an hour at department stores and hospitals. 56 people were killed and more than 200 more were injured. Several Islamic terrorist organizations claimed responsibility.
28 times acquittal
Prosecutors had demanded the death penalty. The judge spoke of a very rare case that has cost many innocent lives. The convicts will appeal, their lawyer says. 28 suspects were acquitted for lack of evidence.
Ahmedabad is located in the western state of Gujarat. There are frequent violent clashes between Hindus and Muslims. In 2008, the current Prime Minister Modi was the most senior administrator in the state.
