A 37-year-old man lost his temper at a police station in Bremen-Mitte on Friday evening (10 August) and threatened the police with a hammer. According to the police, the man was later overpowered by special forces on Osterdeich after an extensive manhunt.
Late in the afternoon, the man hit the windows in the entrance area of the Mitte police station with a hammer and is said to have threatened the emergency services on site with the hammer. The police further reported that the mentally disturbed man then fled. The police then initiated extensive search measures and finally arrested him at Osterdeich.
The use of a teaser on the man was unsuccessful. The 37-year-old then fled to the banks of the Weser and briefly went into the water. Special forces then overpowered and arrested him. Since he had inflicted injuries on himself with the hammer, he was given medical treatment, according to the police.
The 37-year-old man was taken to a psychiatric facility for assessment. The police have filed various criminal charges, including attempted grievous bodily harm and threats. Further investigations are ongoing.
There were traffic disruptions around the Osterdeich on Friday evening, and shipping traffic on the Weser was also affected during the operation. Rescue workers and divers from the fire service as well as two police boats and one rescue boat were involved in the large-scale police operation, the police said.
