36 years of theater in the cradle of Theater: Villamuriel raises the curtain on its National Amateur Competition

Tomorrow, Sunday, the Cerrata municipality’s theater competition begins with the play La Vigilia del Pincel

In Villamuriel de Cerrato, what is considered the first play in Spanish is performed every Christmas. But the cultural activity of the third municipality in the province was not anchored in the time of Gómez Manrique, but clings to the present, to the new theatrical proposals.

For this reason, every year it organizes a National Amateur Theater competition that in 2024 reaches its 36th edition and will start tomorrow.

Five weekends of theater with works coming from almost all parts of the country, selected from more than a hundred proposals that came to the organization of the Contest. “In this edition, more than 100 theater companies from all over the country sent their proposals to participate, which underlines the importance and prestige of this contest. However, only five of them have been selected to compete in the official competition, which turns their performances into a true showcase of the best of amateur theater,” the Villamuriel de Cerrato City Council points out, highlighting that this competition also has the endorsement of the Federation of Amateur Theater of Castilla y León, “which guarantees the quality of the works presented and ensures that this event continues to be an unmissable event for lovers of amateur theater.”

The contest will begin tomorrow, October 13, at the Jesús Meneses Theater, starting at 7 p.m., like the rest of the performances.

The first representation will be The Brush Vigilby the Teatro en Diseño company (Alicante), which will stage this tragicomedy for all audiences that addresses art and life from a tone between serious and comic, making the viewer reflect on the different ways of approaching creation artistic.

On Sunday, October 20, the appointment will be with Now It’s All Night (Stock Clearance) from the company Ayusteatro, also from Alicante. Its dramatic comedy, recommended for ages 14 and up, mixes humor and deep themes about life and the decisions we make.

The comedy Volpone from León’s Teatro en Obras will arrive in Villamuriel on October 27. Its fun story, which mixes ambition, deception and comic situations, with a fast-paced rhythm that will make attendees laugh, is recommended for ages 13 and up.

After the break of the Todos los Santos bridge, on November 10, it will be the turn of The Beautiful Don Diego, from the Arcón de Olid company (Valladolid). A comedy of entanglements that portrays the habits and manias of a vain character and the consequences of his actions. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

The last representation in the competition will be Six the Musical, from the Musicales 3C company. The appointment, November 17.

All of them will compete for various awards such as Best Play, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Performance, Best Direction and the long-awaited Audience Award, where attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite work.

Closing, awards ceremony and finale

On Saturday, November 30, the closing gala and awards ceremony will take place. This year, the gala will feature the participation of the renowned actor and comedian Mario Ezno, who, in addition to presenting the awards to the winning companies, will offer a special show that promises to make the public laugh and move.

One day later, on Sunday, December 1, the Villamuriel de Cerrato theater cycle will close with the performance of The Queen of Beauty, which features the interpretations of the renowned actresses María Galiana and Lucía Quintana.

“This production, of great prestige, will close the contest with a story full of emotions and top-level performances. María Galiana, one of the most beloved actresses on the Spanish scene, together with Lucía Quintana, will offer a performance that will be the perfect ending to this long-awaited theatrical event,” the Contest indicates.

National Premiere

Within the theatrical programming of October and November, the absolute national premiere of the work will take place at the Jesús Meneses Theater. La Lazarilla de Tormes starring Soledad Mallol and David Bueno on November 24 at 7:00 p.m.
