36 officers injured and ten arrested in riots in Liège

Yesterday, 36 police officers were injured in the riots in the Belgian city of Liège. Nine of them have been treated in hospital. Ten people were arrested, the Liège police reports.

In town, a Black Lives Matter rally got out of hand; according to local media, the demonstration was infiltrated by youths who wanted to cause damage. They destroyed a McDonald’s restaurant and shops and pelted a police station and city hall. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the rioters.

In Belgian media, Liège mayor Demeyer already stated that some of the rioters did not come from Liège, but from Brussels and France.

The reason for the BLM demonstration was an incident with a black woman, who was arrested by the police this week. Images of that arrest sparked uproar on social media.
