Waterfall. In order to meet the needs of hospitals and doctors’ offices for urgent blood preparations in the coming weeks and next winter, the German Red Cross urgently asks the population to donate blood. “Important weeks have begun ahead of patient care,” said DRK West blood donation service press spokesman Stephan David Küpper. “We know the difficult times when it comes to blood donations, because many external factors influence blood donations in the autumn and winter,” continues Küpper. Due to the cold spells, flu season and more of the Corona, many potential blood donors are absent. Küpper points out: “Since less blood than necessary has been donated for several weeks, we absolutely must take countermeasures to avoid running into a supply bottleneck anymore.”
After a normal cold, you can donate blood again as soon as the symptoms are gone. To be on the safe side, a buffer a week after it has calmed down makes sense. After taking antibiotics or a febrile illness, a four-week break should be scheduled before the next blood donation. Anyone who has contracted the crown and has had a mild course of the disease (e.g. runny nose or cold symptoms) must wait one week after the symptoms have subsided before they can donate again. After severe coronary artery disease (e.g. fever), you must wait up to four weeks after symptoms have subsided before you can donate blood again.
Appeal for blood donation
Küpper points out: “Since less blood than necessary has been donated for several weeks, we are now making an urgent appeal to avoid a supply bottleneck.”
To supply the blood bank and ensure supply, DRK Blood Donation Service West needs up to 3,500 blood donations every day! Hence the urgent appeal to show humanity in the form of blood donation in the fall and in the run-up to Christmas.
