35 years ago, on November 9, 1989, the Wall fell. On this occasion, Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil met with his counterpart Reiner Haseloff in Helmstedt.

Prime Minister Weil (SPD) said on Saturday in the former border town of Helmstedt that the determination and moral courage of many people in the GDR had led to the fall of the Wall. For him, November 9, 1989 also remains associated with the value of solidarity. “The people in the Federal Republic and the GDR stuck together even under the most difficult conditions and ensured that the threads of conversation were not broken.” Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Haseloff (CDU) emphasized: “In the end, the people’s courage, self-empowerment and desire for freedom triumphed over the dictatorship.”
