The Kahovka HPP controlled by Russian troops was blown up on June 6, flooding parts of Kherson and Mykolaiv regions. Kyiv claims that the HPP was blown up by Russia to deter a Ukrainian counterattack.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klimenko, said that after the destruction of the Kahovka HPP, a total of 77 towns and villages were flooded, and 35 people were missing in the Kherson region.
As a result of the floods, five people died in Kherson region and one person lost his life in Mykolaiv region, the minister said.
A total of 3,700 people were evacuated from their homes in both regions.
In the city of Kherson, the largest population center near the hydroelectric plant, the water level has started to recede and local residents have started returning to their homes to assess the damage, an AFP journalist reported from the scene.
Meanwhile, rescuers with boats continue to evacuate people from the most affected areas of the city.
Lora Musyan, an employee of Kherson’s meteorological agency, said the water level had dropped by 1.7 meters compared to the maximum readings recorded earlier this week.
Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin and representatives of the International Criminal Court visited the Kherson region, Kostin’s office said.
“This is the biggest environmental disaster since Chernobyl, so we are investigating not only a war crime, but also ecocide,” Ukraine’s Prosecutor General said. “The situation is very difficult,” he added.
He noted that several dangerous facilities have been flooded, including at least three cemeteries, oil storage terminals and waste dumps.
A total of 450 tons of turbine oil have spilled into the waters of the Dnieper and the Black Sea, Kostin said.
More than 170 prosecutors are investigating the destruction of the Kahovka HPP. The staff of the International Criminal Court is also helping in the investigation, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine revealed.
It is reported that as a result of the destruction of the Kahovka HPP, the process of desalination has started in the Black Sea, and the salinity of the water on the coast of Odessa is almost three times lower than the norm, the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine announced on Sunday.
On Saturday, inspectors took seawater samples at three locations in Odessa for testing. The results show that the salinity of the water is 2.7 times lower than the normal level.
As already reported, on June 6, Russian troops blew up the Kahovka HPP, flooding parts of Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ruslan Strilecs, announced that the environmental damage caused by the Kahovka HPP explosion is already estimated at more than 55 billion hryvnias.
