Berlin (dpa) – The German champions have been decided, but not all decisions in the Bundesliga have been made yet. It’s against relegation and about qualifying for the European Cup. And Robert Lewandowski has a special record in mind.
RECORD HUNT: After the premature championship title, FC Bayern Munich’s main goal in the last two games is a personal success: Does star striker Robert Lewandowski break Gerd Müller’s goal record? The Poles are only missing one hit to the 40 goals of the “Bomber” from the 1971/72 season. Looking at Lewandowski’s balance sheet, it would be a huge surprise if that didn’t work. In his last eight league appearances, the world footballer posted 15 goals, and he hasn’t been goalless two games in a row this season. He only trained briefly on Thursday. According to the association on Thursday, this was due to the “load control”.
RELEASE FIGHT: Hertha, Augsburg, Bremen, Bielefeld and Cologne are in the middle of the relegation battle two game days before the end. The Augsburgers would make the rescue with a win in a direct duel against Werder. If Bremen wins the match, which both coaches describe as a “nerve game”, the North Germans have a chance of a happy ending if they lose points to the competition. Cologne, however, could be determined ahead of schedule as the second relegated team next to Schalke – even if former coach Friedhelm Funkel does not believe in it.
EUROPEAN CUP: Who will make it into the Champions League? In terms of the premier class, the 33rd matchday could provide clarity. If the third place in the table VfL Wolfsburg wins at RB Leipzig, qualification for the group stage can no longer be deprived of the wolves. Fourth Borussia Dortmund would only be certain to win at FSV Mainz 05 if Fifth Eintracht Frankfurt lost at FC Schalke. Bayer Leverkusen against Union Berlin, sixth with five points more than seventh Borussia Mönchengladbach, has the best prospects for second place in the Europa League. Borussia against VfB Stuttgart would currently qualify for the new Conference League, but they have Union, SC Freiburg, which plays against champions FC Bayern, and VfB on their backs.
HEIMSPIEL: It is hardly emotional in view of the coronavirus pandemic. When FC Schalke 04 plays a Bundesliga home game for the last time against Frankfurt on Saturday, there will still be no spectators. We can only hope that it will remain peaceful. After the sealed relegation of Schalke three weeks ago, adventurous hunting scenes by angry supporters occurred to the players at the arena. In the 2nd division there is a lot that the Revierclub has to repair.
QUARANTINE: The preparation for the end of the season went differently, the clubs are in quarantine training camp – not always alone. Some of the stars of FC Bayern could look forward to the support of their loved ones. After a few players’ wives, like the Munich professionals and the support staff, had subjected themselves to the requirements of the hygiene concept with corona tests and domestic quarantine, they were allowed to move into the team hotel with their men. According to information from the dpa on Thursday, a handful of women took the opportunity, and very few small children were also there. First, the “Bild” reported about it. According to the DFL, the Bayern training camp is not a violation of the hygiene concept.
