336 thousand supplies and medicines expire

Chihuahua— In the Health Services warehouses there are 336 thousand 492 pieces, among boxes of medicines and medical supplies, which are expired or about to expire, according to records released by personnel from the Department’s Warehouse and Distribution Department.

In the warehouse inventory there are drugs such as levonorgestrel tablet or tablet – which is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse – which has expired since November 1, 2017, while 47,142 will no longer be suitable for consumption at the end of July and during the month of August.

In 2018, 118 pieces of medications were spoiled and in 2019 there were 152,316 pieces or boxes of drugs and medical supplies, while 136,914 had expired this year.

The inventory indicates the cost of each piece or box, whose total sum is 27 million 625 thousand 708.10 pesos, which were lost when not used in the health areas.

The document shows that the boxes, pieces or containers of medicines and supplies with an expiration date of 2017 and 2018 represent a cost to the public treasury of 18 thousand 74.70 pesos.

The drugs or medical material that expired in 2019 and still remain in the Health Services warehouse, which are more than 152 thousand, have a cost of 7 million 138 thousand 320.03 pesos.

While the products spoiled this year are more than 136 thousand. The cost of these, according to the table of the inventories of said agency, is 18 million 690 thousand 693.50 pesos in total.

It is also disclosed in the official table of the state agency that more than 47 thousand are about to expire in July and August, which represents a cost of one million 778 thousand 619.87 pesos.

Warehouse and Distribution Department staff mention that medications or supplies that are a few months away from expiration are not distributed because they may stop serving before being delivered to patients.

Of the more than 330 thousand expired or expiring medications, 28 thousand 719 have been received in the warehouse since 2015; 98 thousand 526 in 2016 and 3 thousand 381 in 2017. The majority were acquired in 2018, registering a total of 107 thousand 953, while last year they were 91 thousand 594 and for this 2020 there are 6 thousand 319.
