334 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in Thailand, 327 local infections and seven imported, bringing the total to 29,905.
The figure is up sharply from the 250 new cases announced on Tuesday, an increase of 33%.
Apisamai Srirangson, deputy spokesperson for the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Wednesday that 174 new cases had been confirmed in hospitals on Tuesday and 153 had been detected through mass testing.
Bangkok has recorded 216 new cases (66% of the daily increase), including 133 found by mass testing (including 126 Thai and two Filipino) and 83 confirmed in hospitals (81 Thai, one Lao and one Indian).
“New cases in the provinces are linked to infections at entertainment venues in Bangkok. The current Covid-19 situation is as serious as that which has occurred in Bang Khae district and raises serious concerns, ”said Dr Apisamai.
From Sunday to Wednesday, new cases of Covid-19 were reported in 27 provinces, Dr Apisamai said.
Covid-19 is believed to have spread rapidly in enclosed spaces like entertainment venues (bars and nightclubs) in Bangkok, where people often have to be very close to each other and scream to be heard because of the loud music.
The government is not spared: the Minister of Transport tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday and was hospitalized today.
12 ministers were then placed in isolation at home for 14 days as well as the entire parliamentary group to which the Minister of Transport (Bumjatai) belongs.
