“Although the data at European level reflect a relatively good situation for Romanians in terms of normal weight, the reality shows that, according to the distribution of the population according to the Body Mass Index (BMI), only 44% of Romanians over 18 are normal weight, while 33% are overweight, 15% obese and 5% underweight.
The number of people with a normal weight decreases dramatically after the age of 35. It is thus observed that over the age of 55 only 3 out of 10 Romanian they have a normal weight, while two thirds are overweight or obese “, it is shown in a press release sent on Tuesday by ISRA Center.
According to the quoted source, there is an “obvious” correlation between education and obesity. So if among the population with low education, the share of obese people is 21%, among those with higher education their percentage decreases up to 12%.
The same study shows that most Romanians (51%) think they have a normal weight, while 4 out of 10 believe that their weight is higher than it should be.
Perception of one’s physical condition is not always objective, the research reveals. Thus, 23% of Romanians who describe their own weight within normal limits are, in fact, overweight or obese according to the Body Mass Index.
“Only 39% of Romanians check their caloric intake every time they choose a new product. A person’s physical condition does not change this behavior, the results being similar in the case of the overweight or obese population.
By the way, 3 out of 10 Romanians never check the caloric description of a product bought for the first time and 2 out of 10 check this on less than half of the occasions, “the study said.
At the same time, the research reveals that 3 out of 10 Romanians increased the consumption of fruits or vegetables and 4 out of 10 decreased the consumption of sugar or sweets.
According to the survey, 9% of those surveyed gave up sugar, pork is no longer part of the diet of 5% of Romanians, 9% gave up fried foods, and 5% no longer consume salt.
“It is therefore observed that 18% of obese people gave up sugar, while only 5% of those in the normoponderal group made the same decision. (…)
In the last 3 years, the diet of 18% of Romanians has changed regarding the inclusion of more organic / eco foods in the menu. 37% of Romanians buy organic farming products at least once a week“, shows the source.
The study was conducted between February 17 and March 8 on a sample of 1,005 respondents, nationally representative for the Romanian population, aged over 15 years. The margin of error is 3.1% at a probability level of 95%. The data were collected through a quantitative questionnaire, through the method of telephone interviews.
