Thirty-two years after its initial release on cassette tapes, a legendary compilation of Czech punk bands is making a comeback. The album, Znouzectnost, originally a cult favorite among punk enthusiasts, is now available as a double 10-inch vinyl record, a format that adds a unique layer of nostalgia to this musical resurrection.
The album, spearheaded by the Pilsen-based band Znouzectnost (ZNC), who are still active today, is presented as a fictional radio broadcast, a creative concept that adds to its charm. “It is indeed newly remastered for ‘vinyl’ and released as a double album. The records have a 10-inch format, something between a classic 12-inch ‘album’ and a ‘single’,” explains Jiří Sláma, head of the Avik music publishing house responsible for the reissue. this unique format harkens back to a bygone era, reminiscent of classic spoken-word releases. “We dusted off a forgotten format, it’s a rarity,” Sláma adds, noting that each side of the record clocks in around 20 minutes.
The enduring appeal of the music is undeniable. “When we were preparing it, I was amazed at how alive and timeless the recordings still are. Back then, no one expected that it would appear in a different format 30 years later. We were just in the mood for it at the time, so we did it, but it still has something to say,” reflects a member of the ZNC band, highlighting the unexpected longevity of the original recordings.
The reissue boasts enhanced visuals, thanks to Olda Neumann of Znouzectnost, who originally designed the artwork. The expanded 10-inch format allows for richer graphics and a more comprehensive booklet, including updated information on the bands featured.”So it’s also for the connoisseurs because Olda (Neumann) luckily had all the 1992 material that he had developed, so there’s some forks and other goodies,” Sláma points out, hinting at hidden treasures for dedicated fans.
Beyond ZNC, the compilation showcases seven other bands, offering a snapshot of the Czech punk scene in 1992. “For example Father’s Children, which is the group of Jarda Svoboda, who is known today thanks to the Traband group. They were starting at that time. There are Plus ours from Chomut, who also work, Petr Mach, Mocela Umbra, who ended shortly after filming, the group Z ničeho nic, which is still active today, Bon Pari from Příbram with their first recordings,” details a band member, providing a glimpse into the diverse range of artists featured.
The album’s success in 1992 was remarkable, given the limited exposure of punk music at the time. “Bon Pari were already very famous at the time, but their entire album was recorded later,” Sláma notes, highlighting the meaning of this compilation in preserving these early recordings. The enduring popularity of vinyl records is also a factor in the reissue’s success, with Sláma observing that many older bands are seeking to release their music on this classic format. “It is indeed really an artifact, a memory of that time and quality,” he concludes.
Global Chip Crisis Hammers US Automakers
The global semiconductor shortage, a crisis that has rippled through various industries, continues to significantly impact American auto manufacturers. Production cuts are becoming increasingly common, leading to longer wait times for consumers and contributing to already inflated vehicle prices.
The shortage, stemming from a confluence of factors including increased demand for electronics and pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, has left automakers scrambling to secure the crucial microchips needed for modern vehicle production. This isn’t just affecting luxury brands; even popular models from major domestic manufacturers are experiencing production delays.
One industry executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, commented, “This isn’t just a short-term blip; we’re looking at a situation that coudl impact production for the foreseeable future. The ripple effects are substantial, affecting not only our bottom line but also the availability of vehicles for American consumers.”
Rising Prices and Longer Wait Times
The reduced production capacity directly translates to higher prices for new vehicles. Dealerships are reporting increased demand coupled with limited supply, driving up the cost of both new and used cars. Consumers are facing significantly longer wait times, sometimes stretching for months, to receive their ordered vehicles.
The impact extends beyond the immediate automotive sector. The shortage is affecting the broader US economy, impacting related industries like parts manufacturing and transportation. Experts warn that the situation could worsen before it improves, urging policymakers to address the underlying supply chain vulnerabilities.
Another industry analyst noted, “The current situation highlights the fragility of global supply chains. We need a more resilient and diversified approach to ensure future stability and prevent similar disruptions from crippling key sectors of the American economy.”
Looking Ahead
While some experts predict a gradual easing of the chip shortage in the coming months, the full recovery remains uncertain. The automotive industry is actively working on diversifying its supply chains and exploring alternative solutions to mitigate future disruptions. However, the immediate future for American car buyers remains one of higher prices and longer wait times.
