32 people have died after a train accident

At least 32 people have died and 66 are injured in a train collision in southern Egypt, reports a TV channel in the country.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health confirms the incident.

Video footage obtained by the news agency AFP shows that several carriages have overturned at the accident site, which is located in Sohag province, about 460 km south of the capital Cairo.

– The trains did not crash at such a high speed. It has led to the destruction of two train cars, and a third has overturned, says a security source to the news agency Reuters.

Many ambulances

According to Sky News Many ambulances have been sent to the scene. Some of the injured must have been unconscious.

The country’s health ministry itself reports that 36 ambulances have been sent to the accident site. The injured are being taken to hospitals in the area. It is also stated that three carriages have overturned.

More events

Egypt has previously experienced several serious train accidents.

In August 2017, around 50 people lost their lives and 120 were injured when a train from Cairo crashed into another that was standing still at a small station near Alexandria.

And in February 2019, an unmanned locomotive crashed into a platform at a station in Cairo, which led to a fire and the loss of 31 lives.

The many accidents are due to both poor infrastructure and maintenance as well as human failure.
