32 Deaths from Influenza in 2023: Ministry of Health Reports

The Ministry of Health analyzed 4,200 samples, of which 640 are positive for influenza. 16 men have died and the same number of women

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported five new deaths from influenza during week 28, for a cumulative of 32 deaths so far in 2023, none with a vaccine. They were four women and one man, identified (three with influenza A and two with influenza B). In addition, the age of those deceased ranges from 7 months to 88 years.

Of the 32 deaths from influenza, 16 men and 16 women, and the age range between 1 month to 88 years.

These deaths correspond to the regions of Health, Metropolitan with eight deaths; West Panama with seven; North Panama with three; San Miguelito with three; Chiriquí with three; Darien with two; Veraguas with two and with one are the regions of Salud de Colón, Bocas del Toro, Coclé and one with residence in San Miguelito, but was confined to eastern Panama (Chepo).

93% (30/32) had risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, lung, kidney and neurological problems and immunosuppression and none had been vaccinated. Of these deaths, 22% (7/32) had a history of having a positive covid-19 test.

According to information from the Expanded Immunization Program, a total of 1,231,362 doses of the influenza vaccine were applied from April 12 to July 17, 902,160 have been placed by Minsa and by the Social Security Fund. (CSS) another 329 thousand 202 doses.

The regions with the most doses applied are Metropolitan with 213,926 (148,181 are from Minsa and 65,745 from the CSS); West Panama with 174,753 doses applied (96,119 from Minsa and 78,634 from CSS) and Chiriquí with 160,448 doses (129,556 from Minsa and 30,892 from CSS).
