During the restoration of an ancient farmhouse in Eindhoven, an earthenware pot containing 317 silver coins was found. The oldest coin dates from 1680, the most recent from 1824, reports the municipality of Eindhoven.

Because the coins are often badly damaged, the financial value is low. But the historical value is great. “The coins offer a wonderful insight into our past,” says CDA alderman Maes van Lanschot Broadcasting Brabant. “We will be exhibiting the coins so that everyone can enjoy this heritage.”

Philo van Gasselt and Willem van den Hurk bought a farm from 1584 in Eindhoven about a year ago. The building had been empty for quite some time. “We had to completely insulate the walls and floor,” says Van Gasselt. The tiles, which were loose on the sand floor, also had to be removed.

When Van den Hurk started digging, he suddenly heard a creak. It turned out that he had broken an old pottery jar. Soon he dug up the 317 coins.

Louis XIV

Most coins have turned green. A sign of the times: silver coins also contain copper to strengthen the coin. Copper oxidizes after a long time and gives the coins a green-blue color. Little is left of a number of coins. There are also coins that are still partly silver and where you can see what is written on them.

An initial investigation shows that the coin find consists mainly of equestrian shillings: about 217 pieces, mainly from Nijmegen. In addition, there were provincial guilders, 3 guilders from West Friesland, 10 shillings from Zeeland and half silver ducats in the pot. “There is a coin with the text ‘Lodewijk XIV’ on it, with his head on it,” says Van Gasselt.

Everyone can enjoy

Experts have not yet examined the find for value and origin, but the residents of the farm are not waiting for that. They donated their find to the municipality of Eindhoven. He will announce more details at a press conference on Wednesday. Alderman Van Lanschot: “We will exhibit the coins so that everyone can enjoy this heritage.”
