GORAJUARA – Voyager 2 is still carrying out its mission by visiting the planet Uranus on January 24, 1989.
Reporting from nasa.gov, 30 years ago the Voyager 2 spacecraft took a close look at this mysterious and distant gas planet.
Voyager 2 sent back stunning images of the planet Uranus and its moons during the flyby, which allowed for a close-up of about 5.5 hours.

The spacecraft was within 50,600 miles or the equivalent of 81,500 km from Uranus during that time.
Uranus is the coldest known planet in our solar system, although not the furthest from the Sun.
Scientists determined that Uranus’ atmosphere consists of 85% hydrogen and 15% helium.
There is also evidence of a boiling ocean about 500 miles or about 800 km below the cloud tops.
Scientists also discovered that Uranus has a magnetic field that is different from any they have ever encountered before.

On Mercury, Earth, Jupiter and Saturn the magnetic field is approximately parallel to the axis of rotation.
Uranus’ surface field is also stronger than Saturn’s.
Data from Voyager 2 helped scientists determine Uranus’s magnetic tail rotates into a helix that stretches 6 million miles or about 10 million km in a direction away from the Sun.
Voyager 2 also discovered 10 new moons for a total of 27 and 2 new rings on the planet, which also proved interesting.
