30,000 Evacuated as Fires Ravage Greek Island of Rhodes

ATHENS, July 22 / WAM / Today, 30,000 people were evacuated to safe areas and places, due to the raging fires on the Greek island of Rhodes.

The tourists and some residents were taken to the gyms, schools and conference centers of hotels on the island, where they will spend the night while firefighters battle the blaze.

The governor of the South Aegean region, George Hadzimarkos, said that the evacuation process, which was still underway, had been hampered by the fires that had blocked some roads, adding that the aim was to save lives.

A Rhodes municipality official was quoted as saying that dozens of buses were being used by the coast guard, armed forces and local employees to help ferry people away from the fires.
