3000 rupees to get passport; Akshaya Kendras squeeze people

Akshaya Kendras charge customers more than double the fixed amount per application. There are widespread complaints against Akshaya centers in Kottuvalli, Alangad and Paravur regions. Passport application is Rs 1500 but purchase from these Akshaya Kendras is Rs 3000.

As the amount was charged more than double, the locals complained to the District Akshaya Kendra authorities. Double amount is charged for passport, ration card applications, community certificate, income certificate and various types of applications for educational purposes.

3000 rupees was demanded from a resident of Tattapilly who came to apply for a passport through Akshaya Kendra. The application fee for community certificate is 20 rupees. But 50 rupees were demanded from the native of Alangad. With this, when I approached other Akshaya centers, I was told that I wanted the same amount.

There is a law that rates of services should be listed. But these instructions are not followed in most Akshaya centers. All applications have been made online through Akshaya to reduce congestion in government offices. But people are getting bogged down by the exorbitant charges being levied by Akshaya operators.

Akshaya centres doubled the fees
