You have reported to us an image that in the past few hours has gradually become more viral, after the story ofnurse who would die, after that other of the Bell’s palsy, here comes new news to scare those in doubt about the vaccine for Covid-19.
I found the image almost everywhere, on the message boards of those who disinform in a serial manner; here on the notice board of Palleschi, the kid for whom Sweden is like Disneyland where everything is fine and nobody ever dies:
On the disinformazione.it website signed by Marcello Pamio, our old acquaintance, the question is presented as follows:
According to the CDC in Atlanta, that is the US Infectious Disease Control Centers, from December 14, 2020 to December 18, 3,150 people became disabled as a result of the anti-Covid vaccine.
Let me be clear, the image that is presented is real: about 2.8% of people who had received the Pfizer vaccine as of December 18 had an adverse reaction that required the intervention of a doctor or health assistant.
But that doesn’t mean being disabled.
ofṡable agg. e s. m. e f. [comp. di dis–1 e abile, esemplato sull’ingl. disable]. – Term used in bureaucratic, sociological and also medical language, referring to subjects who have some physical or even psychological impairment of a relatively minor degree; synon. sometimes of handicappato.
Pamio and Palleschi (like all the others who are sharing the image) are not stupid, they know perfectly well that according to the Italian language with disabled it refers to a specific condition from which there is no escape. Instead, the adverse reactions referred to by the CDC, as explained, have needed the attention of doctors or health care workers, but are not permanent conditions. Of course there may be the exception, no one is saying that it is impossible, but to date there have been no cases that generate such a serious adverse reaction. That “unable to perform daily activity, unable to work” applies to both fever and Bell’s palsy, but it doesn’t mean there are people reduced to a vegetable.
The good news, however, is that 97.2% of vaccinated people have experienced adverse reactions of almost no magnitude. The vast majority of vaccinated people in the US are doing well, and this is something very important to note.
All vaccines have adverse reactions, it is absolutely normal for this to happen. Serial disinformers and anti-vaccinists have no intention of explaining why this happens, but I think it is appropriate to explain it in a very simplistic way.
The adverse reaction is a clear sign that the immune system is responding to the vaccine. To be even clearer, as he explained The Atlantic:
Vaccines, after all, work by tricking the body into thinking it has been infected and these “symptoms” are an indication that it has done so successfully. Fever, fatigue, and other signs we associate with a cold or flu, or even COVID-19 are typically caused by our immune responses, not the virus itself. “A reactogenic vaccine is not the same as an unsafe vaccine,” says Saad Omer, a vaccinologist and director of the Yale Institute for Global Health.
I don’t think it is necessary to add more.
