3,000 attempts to bypass Russian sanctions uncovered by Estonian customs authorities

Since the invasion of Ukraine launched by Russia, the Estonian Tax and Customs Administration has inspected more than 53,000 shipments of goods. During this time, the administration detected approximately 3,000 attempts to circumvent the sanctions applied to Russia.

The statistics collected by the Estonian authorities include Estonian individuals and companies, as well as citizens from other EU member states.

Violations by private individuals are mostly related to attempts to bring luxury goods and large sums of cash in Euro currency to Russia.

On the other hand, violations by legal entities are related to attempts to circumvent the ban on exporting mechanisms and mechanical devices to Russia.
