The hand biker and blogger Veit Riffer rode the 300-kilometer cycle path and analyzed it. There were only a few problem areas, which have now been revised. Uwe Stanke, project manager for the Five Rivers Cycle Path at the East Bavaria Tourism Association, proudly says: “We have now developed a handbike-compatible track and a bookable offer.” nominated for the Bavarian cycle tourism award The Golden Pedal. Stanke invites you to get to know the cycle path: “300 kilometers, five rivers and 70 beer gardens along the way are the best reasons for it.”

tourism for everyone

“Tourism for everyone shouldn’t just be a catchphrase,” Uwe Stanke is convinced. It was important to him to make the cycle path passable for hand bikers as well: “The initial spark came from inquiries as to whether the Five Rivers Cycle Path can be used with a hand bike and whether there are bookable offers. In fact, we weren’t sure if the path was handbikeable throughout. A bookable offer was missing completely. With Veit Riffer, we got a practitioner on board. He has been paralyzed from the waist down since a climbing accident and has discovered the handbike for himself. He put the Five Rivers Cycle Path through its paces for us.”

In the result report by Veit Riffer, it turns out that the Five Rivers Cycle Path is basically handbike-compatible, with the exception of a few places. Solutions are found for the few problem areas and a handbike-compatible track is developed. A new bookable offer is now on the market. In addition to accommodation, this also includes luggage and wheelchair transfers from place to place.

Holidays by bike are trendy

Cycle tourism plays a major role in Germany. 41.6 million people went on at least one day trip by bike in 2021, four million went on a bike tour. This says the study of the ADFC. More than three quarters of the cycle tourists spent their holidays in Germany, a quarter of them in Bavaria. In 2021, the Five Rivers Cycle Route was among the top ten long-distance cycle routes for the first time. In terms of guest satisfaction with the cycle path, the Five Rivers Cycle Path even got the best mark. He also has the most followers on social media.

Get to know the country and people of the Bavarian Jura

The most important reasons for going on a bike tour are the proximity to the country and its people, being able to spend an active holiday and doing something for your health, as well as being environmentally friendly.
This is exactly what the Five Rivers Cycle Path offers. For those who love water and the adventure world on the water, the Five Rivers Cycle Path opens up pure sensory enjoyment of nature. The cycle path is 300 kilometers long and can be ridden in five daily stages, but also in other variants.
The rivers Danube, Altmühl, Pegnitz, Vils and Naab are the babbling companions on the tour through the Bavarian Jura, more precisely on the round trip from Regensburg via Kelheim, Neumarkt, Nuremberg and Amberg back to Regensburg. The long-distance cycle path is signposted in both directions. It mostly leads on bike paths or farm tracks and only in exceptional cases on roads.
