A captivating discussion about political education took place at the Lößnitzgymnasium in Radebeul, during which two representatives of the “Last Generation”, Carla Rochel and Amélie Schütte, talked to politicians, students and teachers. Among the discussion participants were Sven Eppinger from the CDU and the Green city councilor Oliver von Gregory. The event, moderated by Peter Müller, developed into a lively exchange about the importance and limits of political education in schools.
The discussion was accompanied by various viewpoints, particularly with regard to dealing with controversial political issues such as the AfD in a school context. There was extensive debate about the age at which political education should start and how it can be designed in a practice-oriented manner. There was a consensus that political education should not only consist of theoretical knowledge, but must also include practical skills such as discussion skills and social engagement.
Despite the diversity of opinions, there was agreement on the need to promote an improved culture of discussion in schools. This would allow students to be actively involved in political discussions. The panelists agreed that civic education should be promoted not only in the classroom, but also through extracurricular activities and practical experiences.
Overall, the question remained open as to how political education at a young age could be specifically designed. However, this discussion provided an important platform to explore different perspectives and highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to civic education in schools.
