The Leverkusen fans in the Ulrich Haberland Stadium were already in a celebratory mood on Sunday evening, August 28, 1994. The Werkself were already 3-0 up against Eintracht Frankfurt, and the first point of the new season was safe. But when the stadium announcer announced the first Bayer substitution in the 73rd minute, the mood became even more exuberant: Rudi Völler came on for Ulf Kirsten, playing his first Bundesliga game in almost seven years and his 171st overall. Up to this point, Völler had scored 106 Bundesliga goals for Werder Bremen and TSV 1860 Munich before moving abroad to AS Roma and then to Olympique Marseille.
