Thirty people are to stand trial in Cuba. They are suspected of having stolen a large batch of chicken meat. They used the proceeds to buy televisions, laptops and refrigerators. Chicken is one of the products that is rationed in the communist country.
The group managed to capture about 133 tons of chicken meat last week, Cuban state media reported. That is about a month’s supply for an average Cuban province, says the director of food distributor Copmar Reuters.
Copmar is the government’s distribution agency. The agency is responsible for the distribution among the population of rationed goods and products.
The group of thirty includes employees of the distribution center where the robbery took place. Several hired security guards from the complex have also been arrested. The suspects face a prison sentence of up to twenty years.
Cuba is facing significant economic headwinds. Last year, Minister of Economic Affairs Alejandro Gil spoke of the worst economic crisis since the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The poor economic situation makes it increasingly difficult to import food, fuel and medicines.
Cuba is therefore increasingly dependent on food production on the island, but its own agricultural production is also faltering. As a result, the quantity of products available through the ration system has been declining for some time. The products are also often delivered late.
