Israel rejects famine warning in Gaza
Israel on Saturday rejected a warning from a group of experts in the field of global food security that famine could occur in parts of the northern part of the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army is at war with Hamas.
“Unfortunately, researchers continue to rely on partial and biased data and superficial sources with vested interests,” the military said in a statement.
The Famine Review Commission, an independent committee, warned on Friday that there was a “strong possibility of famine in the near future” in the northern Gaza Strip. It said in a rare warning that “there is a need on immediate action within days, not weeks, by all actors directly involved in the conflict or influencing its course to avoid this catastrophic situation and reduce its severity .
Israel said it had stepped up aid efforts, including opening an additional crossing on Friday.
In response to a question about the Famine Review Committee’s warning, a US State Department spokesman said on Saturday that Washington was concerned about the limited amount of aid reaching civilians living in Gaza, and that the report shows how bad the situation was.
The spokesman said, “We have made it clear to Israel, and we will continue to make it clear, that it needs to do more to get access and deliver aid into Gaza,” noting – note that the United States is working with Israel, the United Nations, and other partners to find solutions to speed up the delivery of aid.
He said that Hamas should release its guards and not interfere with any humanitarian efforts.
The Israeli army said that 39,000 trucks carrying more than 840,000 tons of food have entered Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023, noting that meetings are held daily with the United Nations, which has 700 aid trucks awaiting delivery and distribution.
Some critics have denounced the strategy of starvation in northern Gaza, prompting the United States, Israel’s main ally, to set a deadline that will end within days to the humanitarian situation to improve or to address potential limitations on military cooperation.
